WEEK 06 – Excellence In All We Do
This week we’re talking about “EXCELLENCE IN ALL WE DO”.
Excellence is one of those ideas that deserves book ends.
On one side, we’re encouraged in Scripture to aim for excellence & good works by these verses:
COLOSSIANS 3:23 – “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men…”
EPHESIANS 6:7-8 – “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.”
TITUS 2:7 – “Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity…”
MATTHEW 5:16 – “…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
But then the other side of excellence that I think we HAVE to talk about is GRACE…:
EPHESIANS 2:8-9 — “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
ROMANS 11:5-6 – “So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.”
So where are we to land?
If you take the whole of Scripture, God’s heart revealed to us through what He has said to us in these and many more verses, it becomes more clear.
His desire is for us to be saved, which is only by His grace & us having faith in Him.
But then His desire is for us to be constantly remade more and more into His likeness, becoming more and more excellent as we aim to give Him our best & display His grace to others.
So it’s always important as we aim for EXCELLENCE, to remember that we lean on His grace 100%. His grace is our very foundation that enables us to now be EXCELLENT.
We shouldn’t beat ourselves up when we fail, as if we weren’t excellent enough. BECAUSE, we should know already that we will NEVER be excellent enough.
Therefore we are free to depend on His grace, to remain so thankful every day for it, AND EMPOWERED BY IT to continue to become more and more excellent in all that we do.
It is God’s grace that empowers us to live an “EXCELLENCE IN ALL WE DO” lifestyle.
And it’s that lifestyle that puts Him on display for all the world to see…”I’m saved by grace, and this is what my amazing God has done with my mess… Isn’t he amazing?”
Let’s get this 2 things solid this week.
- We depend entirely on God’s grace for salvation & growth (and are so thankful for it).
- His grace empowers us to press on, to aim high, to serve wholeheartedly, to do our very best, to represent Him well, etc.
Let’s aim for EXCELLENCE in all that we do this week, as if we were actually doing it to worship & glorify Him in everything that we’re doing.

- Do I do everything in my work, home, family, personal life truly AS UNTO THE LORD?
- Lord, what things in my life, effort wise, truly please you?
- Lord, what specific things would you have me surrender more or apply this idea of “serving you” to?
- Do I use God’s grace as an excuse to give a half effort or live less than His best?
- How can this idea of His grace EMPOWERING more excellence in my life shape me this week?
