WEEK 02 – Philippians 2
This week we’re talking about Philippians 2, and it is incredible!
It’s inspiring, and it’s simple.
Live like Christ. Be like Christ. Have the same mindset & attitude of Christ.
And what does that look like? It means looking to other peoples interests and not just your own. It means having humility like He does, an “other’s before self” mentality, and truly out to serve and meet other peoples needs.
Humble yourself. Don’t shoot for the top. Shoot to go low and to serve. Don’t try to be better than other people. Be great by trying to lift others up higher.
Jesus did that for us by being God & King of Kings forever, but leaving His throne, and coming to Earth as a human, as a baby even, & serving, rescuing, saving, healing us. Dying for us. Forgiving us. Cleansing us. Resurrecting US with Him back into right relationship with God.
Haha, it’s incredible what humility and serving others can accomplish… resurrection of their lives!
He demonstrated how His Kingdom is TOTALLY BACKWARDS from the rest of our culture and world. He said to be great you have to be a servant and a slave.
And He demonstrated it, He died for us on the cross, setting us free from sin and death and separation from Him, and then He was RESURRECTED to new life and given the name above all names!
Paul is saying that it’s the exact same model for us… die with Christ by being humble like Him, and He will RESURRECT you and lift you up to new life. And He’ll resurrect people back to Himself THROUGH YOU by you becoming more like Him in His HUMILITY & SERVANT HEARTEDNESS.
He’ll honor you later. He’ll reward you in Heaven.
In the Kingdom of God, in God’s economy, Death always precedes Resurrection. Go high and you’ll be brought low. But go low, and you’ll be brought high. It’s just how God works.
It’s His nature to be other’s focused and to serve. Paul is writing to the people He loves the absolute most, and He’s writing to us. And He’s saying BE THE EXACT SAME WAY in your relationships with each other.
Become more like Jesus. Humble yourselves. Be servant minded & servant hearted. Don’t grumble or complain or argue, and you will literally SHINE LIKE STARS, bright spots in this dark world, leading people to Jesus because you are SO DIFFERENT than the way most of the world is.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
(1) Do I look like what Paul is describing here? Do I humble myself and aim to serve others (verse 3-4), or do I look out for numero uno, me, myself, and I?
(2) What about when it comes to grumbling, complaining & arguing (verse 14)… Paul says to DO EVERYTHING WITHOUT these. Have you gotten rid of or banned these 3 things from your attitude and actions?
(3) What are some triggers for you in this area? Meaning what are some things that happen externally or internally that usually “cause” you to grumble, complain, or argue? List some of these triggers out.
(4) Now how do you think Jesus would respond in these situations differently than you normally do? How do you think Jesus would have you respond enthuse situations from here on out? (write those down too). Now Set NEW TRIGGERS, that when those spring up, you will HUMBLE YOURSELF in those moments, and re-train your responses & attitude to be more like Christ. (it may be work and disciplining yourself at first, but eventually it will become second nature to be humble, serve others, and be servant hearted more like Jesus).
(5) What relationships can you think of right now that you could change your attitude in, humble yourself, and start to serve and meet their needs, happily, cheerfully, and more with the heart of Jesus, actually loving to serve & bless them? (side note: Yes, you may hate it at first, that is your “flesh” or “sin” or “old self” rearing up. But the new self, the Jesus-like, forgiven self, has got to start shining through, so let that old self die. Let the pride dissolve. Find the strength to admit you were wrong, or to confess humbly how you could have done differently and want to grow & change to meet their needs better in the future. I promise it will bring better connection, more joy, more peace, and even bring His presence & Spirit into those relationships, and it will change everything. Let the difficulty in humbling yourself dissolve into actually enjoying going low, enjoying serving others, and enjoying meeting other peoples needs. The atmosphere of Heaven comes when you do, and it is SO worth it!)

Philippians 2
QUOTES
“When I understand that everything happening to me is to make me more Christlike, it resolves a great deal of anxiety.”
― A.W. Tozer
“Has it ever occurred to you that one hundred pianos all tuned to the same fork are automatically tuned to each other? They are of one accord by being tuned, not to each other, but to another standard to which each one must individually bow. So one hundred worshipers met together, each one looking away to Christ, are in heart nearer to each other than they could possibly be, were they to become ‘unity’ conscious and turn their eyes away from God to strive for closer fellowship.”
― A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God
“Putting on Christ’…is not one among many jobs a Christian has to do; and it is not a sort of special exercise for the top class. It is the whole of Christianity. Christianity offers nothing else at all.”
― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
WEEKLY FOCUS
This week, read through Philippians 2 as many times as you want to.
Think about what it means for you to have the same attitude as Jesus (humility & servant heartedness) when it comes to your relationships with others.
Ask God if there are any areas in your life that need to become more like Him in this way.
Let this theme guide your God time all week, and even your thoughts and conversation with Him through out your days, all week long.
FORM A NEW HABIT THIS WEEK of letting Him chip away at the old, and constantly make you new and more like Him on a regular basis. Let Him speak to you about this idea of becoming more like Jesus in humility & servant heartedness, and see what He says.
We’d love to hear your feedback/thoughts/questions, so hop into the Bible Studies conversation thread in SLACK & we’re excited to see what the Lord speaks to you this week.
BLESSINGS!
