WEEK 20 – CHARACTER IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN SKILL
This week we’re talking about CHARACTER.
Character Is More Important Than Skill
So as we talked about last week, accountability is super crucial to stay on that right path.
As demonstrated THROUGHOUT HISTORY and even in these people we’re reading about in Bible times.
If you notice as you keep reading in 1 Kings and even through 2 Kings, there is just a SUPER depressing amount of people (Kings) who did evil in the sight of the Lord.
One King would follow God & set everything right, then 2 or 3 or 10 after him would just undo everything good the last good king did and totally lead the people away from God.
And the pattern just goes on and on and on and on and on and on… You get the point!
Even look at the difference between David & Solomon. There is a TON more written about King David than about Solomon. I would venture to say because of how much longer David was faithful to God.
When you stick close to God, more may written about you someday. But when you walk away from him, you end up just another speck on the list of people who brought destruction to the people around you.
That’s what I see from these Kings lives. That we’re all Kings & Queens. And we all have the responsibility to walk closely with God, to get rid of idols in our lives & in others lives, and to bring the “nations” (whatever our influence reaches) back to God.
AND to pass it on to the next generation somehow.
I mean I just want to finally see that like 10 Kings in a row all the way until Jesus returns walked closer with the Lord.
Something like that would be AMAZING! Enough with all this back and forth garbage, right!?
But if we’re going to stick with Jesus we have to know that character is more important that skill or achievement, otherwise we will sacrifice character just to get there. We should be willing to do the opposite.
The fact of the matter is that the world puts pressure on us to be “great Kings” in some way shape or form. And we are ALL tempted to be that “great King” in any way that we can, even if it takes cutting some corners and not necessarily doing it God’s way.
But i’m telling you guys, character is more important that skill. You can be the best “whatever” that the world has ever seen, but character will make or break you.
You see it everywhere. No body wants the hot shot on their team because of his attitude and behavior (character).
You cringe at the sports interviews when they’re all about themselves, but love them even more when they’re people of character.
You may or may not become “famous” or “well known” in the world. But I can tell you for sure, that being faithful to God, walking close to Him & walking in his ways, getting that “well done good and faithful servant”… that is a greater reward than anything.
It’s the whole “gain the world but forfeit your soul” thing from Matthew 16:26 & Mark 8:36.
This weeks devo is to recalibrate us away from the temptations that spring up inside of us towards the world, and to strengthen our resolve & love for God & His ways.
Godly character my friends, it’s everything. Righteousness. Closeness with Jesus. This is what you were made for.
And the surprising thing is, that when you develop this Christ-like character in your life, it actually sets you apart as a better leader.
You rise to the top of organizations because people trust you, you get a great spouse because you attract that character in others, you have great community because people love being around you…
No mater what the pursuit, if you bite & claw & push other people down so that you can get to the top, you’re going to falter someday.
But if you develop Christ-like character, it will set you apart as a leader, you will please the Lord & walk closely with Him, and you will grow in favor with God & man just like Jesus did.
So let’s spend some time this week contemplating & praying about character & the ripple effect it has in our lives & in others around us.
(P.S. we’ve got a “Developing Christ-like Character Course” coming out soon. Super exciting stuff as we make this a huge priority & will no doubt see it have a massive affect on our lives.)
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
- Do I see character as more important, or skill & achievement as more important?
- Which one would I rather sacrifice: skill & achievement, or character?
- Yes you can do both well, but ONLY if you make character a priority… how would you rate the priority of developing character in your life on a scale of 1-10 (10 is highest priority)?
- If it is possible to “gain the world, but forfeit your soul”, what do you think it would look like for you to gain your soul & forfeit the world?
SCRIPTURE
1 & 2 Kings / Proverbs 10:6-9 / Luke 12 / Matthew 16:26 / Mark 8:36
WEEKLY FOCUS
This week, read through these Scriptures each morning.
Think about this idea of CHARACTER being of utmost importance.
Ask God if there are any areas you need to surrender or change in order to please Him & walk close with Him.
Let this theme guide your God time all week, and even your thoughts and conversation with Him through out your days, all week long.
Let Him speak to you about this idea of CHARACTER & CLOSENESS, and see what He says.
We’d love to hear your feedback, so hop into the devos conversation thread in SLACK & we’re excited to see what the Lord speaks to you this week.
BLESSINGS!
