week 25 – REVELATION 2 (PART 5) – THE CHURCH IN SARDIS
This week we’re talking about APPEARANCE & LOSING SALVATION.
Jesus drops a bomb on the Church in SARDIS!
He says, “You have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.”
#BOOM
God. Sees. EVVVVVVVVERYTHING!
And He for SURE sees the INSIDE, just like He did when He chose David as King instead of all his other brothers who LOOKED like they would make good kings.
God ALWAYS sees the inside.
He called the Pharisees “WHITE WASHED TOMBS”, looking all great & holy on the outside, but dying, decaying, decrepit, and disgusting on the inside.
So you better believe that He sees our insides as well.
He says I know people think you’re alive by what you do and how it appears on the outside.
But I also know that you are dead, so WAKE UP YO!
Get serious. Get intentional! Get close to me! Strengthen the little you have left inside of you.
Remember everything you’ve been taught. Remember how close you used to be to Jesus, how alive, how close, how passionate… and COME BACK TO THAT!
REVITALIZE THAT!
COME CLOSE TO JESUS AGAIN!
There are always going to be some people who are living intentional and truly alive, and there are always going to be people who are just going through the motions or looking great on the outside with no intimacy with Jesus on the inside to show for it.
DON’T MISS THIS!
He says to the ones who overcome, fully alive with Him, that He “will never blot out his name from the book of life…”
Don’t you think if He is giving them this reassurance, that means that having their names blotted out of the book of life is possible?!
He’s saying to the ones who overcome, “Hey, it’s possible to turn your heart away from me so much that I blot your name out of my book of life. But just stay close to me and that won’t happen to you.”
That’s what He’s saying.
We are the Bride of Christ & He is our Groom. You better believe in a marriage, that divorce is possible, but for those who remain connected and in love and committed, they last to the end together.
The same is true of our relationship with God. We can’t divorce Him in our hearts and just expect to still be married.
He is purifying His Bride.
This is a SUPER sobering message He is bringing to the Church in Sardis.
As it is right now you are in danger of being blotted out.
Very seriously, get your act together. Don’t just go through the motions here. WAKE UP! And I will dress you in white & keep you in my book of life.
What does He say in Romans 11:22-23? “provided that you CONTINUE in His kindness. Otherwise you will be cut off.”
There are plenty of places through out Scripture where Jesus makes it very clear that you are not “once saved always saved.”
Instead it is much more like a REAL relationship. He loves us and is committed to us forever, as long as we love Him and are committed to Him forever.
We can’t be an unfaithful bride and expect to be in Heaven with the Groom we cheated on. I’m sorry. It just doesn’t work that way.
Praise God He is SO gracious and forgiving and washes our sins away.
There is no one that can snatch us from His hands. But we ourselves can definitely take ourselves out of His hands if we want to walk away from Him. He has proven that over and over again through out History.
Today is the day to make sure that we are ALIVE. To make sure that we WAKE UP and “remember what we have received and heard, obey it, and repent.”
Overall, remember, we are in a real live relationship with Jesus. He is the most amazing Groom ever, and He is purifying us His Bride. Let’s be a committed, loving Bride who stays close to our Groom forever and ever.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
- Do I care more about what others think of me, or about what God thinks of me?
- Am I just going through the motions here? Or am I spending time with Jesus, and letting Him reshape how I live to be how He wants me to live?
- Beyond my reputation with other people, what does God see inside of me?
- What are some things that I know I am not surrendering to Him or obeying, that I should?
