WEEK 28 – An Attitude of Gratitude

It is SOOOO easy to start praying and just ASK ASK ASK ASK ASK!

And don’t get me wrong, it SUPER important to know that God LOVES for us to bring our requests to Him!

But there is also a difference in heart when we are always asking and self focused, needing, and viewing our current situation as lacking something.

And when we are thanking Him, grateful for what we have, who He is, what He’s made, etc.

Psalm 16 for me says it absolutely the best.

Check out this passage man, it’s amazing…

PSALM 16: 5-11

“Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;
    you make my lot secure.

The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    surely I have a delightful inheritance.

I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
    even at night my heart instructs me.

I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,

because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
    nor will you let your faithful one see decay.

You make known to me the path of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,
    with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”

You can just hear the thankful heart and the grateful spirit that is just pouring out of David’s lips here.

Jesus said that it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.

David must have REALLy been thankful in His heart, because he’s saying things that most people never say.

“The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places.”

“Surely I have a delightful inheritance.”

He’s talking about finding JOY in God’s presence & eternal pleasure at His right hand.

MAN!

I’m telling you, there is something POWERFUL about perspective & attitude.

There is something POWERFUL and TRANSFORMATIONAL about what you set your eyes on, and how you SEE things.

If you SEE that you want more, and have THAT in your heart, that somethings not right or not complete or whatever, you’re never going to be content or happy.

It’s like a disease or an addiction. You actually TRAIN your spirit to never be satisfied so much so that even when you get the thing you’re longing for, it’s suddenly not so special anymore and you’re off to longing for something else again in no time.

But on the flip side of that, we can find SO MUCH MORE PEACE & JOY if we train our hearts to be content and to see things the way David did here.

That the boundary lines have fallen for US in pleasant places.

That WE have a delightful inheritance.

That WE find joy simply in being with JESUS & ETERNAL PLEASURE at His right hand.

OOOOOoooooooEEEEEE!!!

Now THAT’LL PREACH YOU FEEL ME!?!?!?!

Haha.

Thankfulnness just really does have THAT MUCH POWER.

Paul even said that when we’re offering our requests to God that we should do so with thankfulness in our hearts. (Philippians 4:4-7)

AND He says that thats the trick to walking in God’s peace… His peace actually GUARDS our hearts and minds when we offer our requests to God WITH THANKSGIVING deep in our souls.

We’re in the middle of our MONTH OF THANKFULNESS in LCA, so let’s start this thing off right!

Let’s spend some time this week EVERY MORNING… that’s right… EVERY MORNING… in intentional THANKFULNESS to God.

Fill up those thankfulness journals.

Fill up the throne room of God with thanks & praise (Psalm 100:4)

And let’s super pay attention this week & this whole month to how it changes everything about our perspective on life.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
  1. What am I deeply thankful for? Make a list as big as you want… at least 10-20-30 things, make a big one!
  2. What are seemingly little things that I’m actually really thankful for?
  3. What, in your current situation of life, that you don’t like, can you still find something in which to be thankful for?
SCRIPTURE

Philippians 4:4-7 / Psalm 16 / Psalm 100:4 / Luke 6:45

WEEKLY FOCUS

This week, read through these Scriptures each morning.

Think about this idea of HAVING AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE.

Ask God if there are any areas you need to surrender or change in order to change your current default into THANKFULNESS.

Let this theme guide your God time all week, and even your thoughts and conversation with Him through out your days, all week long.

Let Him speak to you about this idea of THANKFULNESS, and see what He says.

We’d love to hear your feedback, so hop into the devos conversation thread in SLACK & we’re excited to see what the Lord speaks to you this week.

BLESSINGS!
