week 30 – JAMES 3 – TAMING YOUR TONGUE
We’ve all been in situations where our mouths ended up saying something we wished it wouldn’t have said.
And we’ve all had the humbling realization that it was US who said it.
Jesus said that it’s out of the heart that the mouth speaks.
Eesh. We really need to clean up our mouths… AND hearts… if we want to lead people, muchness our own lives well.
James here in Chapter 3 is revealing a secret of the Kingdom to us.
The TONGUE is a key. Tame the tongue, and you will lead well.
Tame the TONGUE & you will rally the troops.
Tame the TONGUE & it will save you from a heap of trouble.
Not only that but it will please God AND it will help you lead people well.
He even goes so far as to give you a little bit of a guide in verses 17-18.
JAMES 3:17-18
“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness”
This is our filter.
This is our river banks, our guide, our bumper rails.
Stay within these guidelines, and you’ll be safe.
Run your words & your wisdom through this list, and make sure it complies.
And you’ll be well on your way to keeping that TONGUE acting in your favor, which is building others up & teaching them in the ways of the Lord.
We don’t want to cause fires with our tongues.
We want to build up and not tear down.
So this deserves some self introspection, and a ton of prayer time with the Holy Spirit, to make sure we’re hearing from Him and keeping all of our tongues & hearts in check within His life-giving ways.
Spend some time with Jesus on this one & ask him these questions, and see what He says.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
- On a scale of 1-10, how am I doing with my tongue in public?
- On a scale of 1-10, how am I doing with my tongue in private?
- When it comes to talking about others, do I ALWAYS build them up, or do I EVER, even sometimes, tear them down (this is to their face AND when they’re not there)?
- How would you have me change this Lord?
- Then run your words through this WISDOM filter in verses 17-18. Do your words pass the test, or do you need some work in some of these areas?
- What about cussing and using foul language? Remember JAMES 2:26 “If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight reign on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.” Ask the Lord, on a scale of 1-10, how am I doing with keeping a tight reign on my tongue? Is my language pleasing to you Jesus?
- Spend some time praying and listening to the Lord about taming your tongue & let Him help you do it.
