week 03 – Philippians 3 – Knowing Jesus is More Fulfilling Than Any Other “Self-accomplishment”

This week we’re talking about PHILIPPIANS 3

Philippians 3 is incredibly inspiring! Paul, the guy who wrote the majority of the New Testament, the guy who knows God so closely, is saying here that nothing he has done in all of his life means anything to him compared to pursuing & knowing God more and more.

He says that the joy & fulfillment that comes from knowing Jesus is 100% more fulfilling than anything else he’s ever accomplished.

So because of that this chapter inspires us into a posture of PURSUIT of Christ, instead of just “being” a Christian.

So often we get into this posture where we’re not so much pursuing Jesus anymore as much as we are just going through the motions.

Instead our passions get tied up in this world and away from Christ, and our joy & peace suffers because of it.

It’s also really easy to think highly of ourselves & our accomplishments or abilities. But it’s funny how LITTLE joy and lasting fulfillment those actually bring compared to intimacy with our Maker.

Paul here is encouraging us to leave behind trying to be great on our own, to die to self & our worldly accomplishments, and to pursue knowing Jesus closer no matter the cost.

And it’s only then that we will experience the surpassing joy & greatness of knowing Christ.

This eternal perspective actually fills us up more than anything this world can.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

1. What might be some accomplishments in your own life that tempt you to hold them higher than knowing Jesus closer?
2. Think about verse 20 and how he talks about our citizenship being in Heaven in stead of here on Earth. Do you feel more excited about Heaven than this life on Earth? Let God speak to your heart about this topic.
3. What about the “posture” idea? Are you PURSUING Christ and long to know Him closer & closer? Or are you currently living satisfied with how close you are? How could you rejuvenate that passionate pursuit?
4. How much do you think about the past? Try to spend some time, like Paul here, straining forward, pressing forward, looking forward to knowing Jesus more.
5. What do verses 10-11 mean to you? spend some time on these in prayer and see what the Lord reveals to you.

WEEKLY FOCUS

This week, read through Philippians 3 as many times as you want to.

Think about what it means for you to crave more of Jesus more than this world.

Ask God if there are any areas in your life that need to become more like Him in this way.

Let this theme guide your God time all week, and even your thoughts and conversation with Him through out your days, all week long.

Let Him speak to you about this idea of knowing Him being more fulfilling than anything else, and see what He says.
