week 08 – Ephesians 4 – “How To Live Worthy Of Your Calling”
This week we’re talking about Ephesians 4.
The theme of unity continues, but with a TWIST!
This time Paul emphasizes that within our unity there is much diversity of gifts, given by God himself.
AND the bigger idea that he hits at is the big WHY behind it.
Why did God give people different gifts?
Verses 11-13 should be an anthem amongst Christians.
The purpose, Paul says here, is so that we would all become mature in Christ, and start to build the body up with our gifts.
Not just pastors teaching a crowd. Not just a crowd getting their spiritual vitamin from a pastor once a week.
But Christians, the lot of us… ALL OF US… maturing in Christ and serving the body TOGETHER, WITH the Pastors, WITH the teachers, WITH the prophets, WITH the apostles, WITH the evangelists, etc…
So he urges us to live lives “worthy of the calling we have received.” (verse 1)
And he describes examples of how we can do that. Using the metaphor (and Truth) of living as children of lighten longer children of darkness… so our lives & lifestyles should exemplify that transformation.
That’s what LCA is all about by the way… to help equip us all in what God has given us, so that we can become leaders engaged in building up the body more and more, as we transform our lives and lifestyles…
Haha Ephesians 4 is right up our ally!
Take note of Paul’s list here of ways God wants us to be changed.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
- Make a bullet pointillist on a piece of paper of the things Paul mentions here that God wants us to be changed in.
- How does your current lifestyle/character measure up? Got some work to do?
- What areas of your life is God nudging at needing to change to reflect your new nature in Christ, the new man, the “children of light” you?
- Out of the 5 things mentioned in Verse 11, which do you most identify with? Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, Teachers? Even if you are not currently active in it, which one feels like your passion zone just most naturally wired in for building up the body?
SCRIPTURE
Ephesians 4
WEEKLY FOCUS
This week, read through Ephesians 4 as many times as you want to.
Think about this “children of the light” lifestyle Paul describes.
Ask God if there are any areas in your life that need to be surrendered/transformed/worked on.
Let this theme guide your God time all week, and even your thoughts and conversation with Him through out your days, all week long.
Let Him speak to you about this idea of “living as children of light” and “living a life worthy of the calling you’ve received”, and see what He says.
We’d love to hear your feedback/thoughts/questions, so hop into the Bible Studies conversation thread in SLACK & we’re excited to see what the Lord speaks to you this week.
BLESSINGS!
