week 23 – REVELATION 2 (PART 3) – THE CHURCH IN PERGAMUM
This week we’re talking about FAITHFULNESS & PURITY.
THE CHURCH IN PERGAMUM
The Church in PERGAMUM was a mixed bag.
It had some incredible stories of perseverance through struggle. And it had some people who held to other gods.
Faithfulness & unfaithfulness in the same church.
So Jesus is speaking to John here, telling him to write to them to make sure they are encouraged to keep persevering in the face of such difficulty, and also to make sure they are committed to purity & worshiping only God & walking in His ways.
Some of their lifestyles were not consistent with what God wants and what brings peace & life & wholeness.
So He was making sure here to let them know (and us know) that it is our responsibility to make sure we are walking in purity and getting rid of false teachers.
And that we are encouraged to live boldly for Him even in a difficult place.
Antipas was said to have been a physician who loved Jesus and therefor other people in the medical field in that day accused him of being disloyal to Caesar. He was condemned to death and placed inside of a copper bull that was then heated over a fire until he died inside.
Horrible suffering that ended with a triumphal entry into Heaven because of his faithfulness.
Both an encouraging and a sobering word to be faithful, to live repentant & pure, to walk in His ways, to make sure we evaluate our lives & listen closely to the Holy Spirit to make sure there is nothing in us that is offensive to Him, and to let Him purify it out of us.
And to be encouraged that faithfulness to Him will give us an incredible reward.
Here He mentions hidden manna, a white stone, and a new name written on it.
It’s definitive what these 3 rewards mean exactly, but they sound amazing. Especially since they’re from our super intentional God who gives the most amazing gifts ever.
Let’s be encouraged & live surrendered and close to Jesus, no matter what comes or what is going on around us!
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
- In what situations is God calling you to be faithful in the face of suffering right now?
- What might the Lord be putting His finger on in your life to surrender to Him in order to make sure you are walking in His ways (purity, worship, righteousness, etc.)?
