week 28 – JAMES 1- BELIEF AND ACTION
This week we’re talking about Belief AND Action.
We’re starting a brand new book study today studying the Book of James. And today obviously is going to start off with James chapter 1.
The whole book is pretty fascinating as it is much more focused on the practical nature and LIFESTYLE of following Jesus rather than the theological side.
It’s a lot like the Proverbs of the New Testament, offering wisdom and LIFESTYLE teaching so that people know what type of LIFESTYLE it should look like if we’re really following Jesus.
The verse that sort of represents the whole book is in chapter 2 when he says that “faith without works is dead…”
It doesn’t make any sense for us to be saved by Jesus from being eternally separated from our Father God, and then for us to continue being our own lord over our lives & lifestyles.
James wants us to learn how to make Jesus our Lord & not just our Savior, how to let Him affect our lives, actions, thoughts, words, motives, everything should change now.
James’s whole heart here seems to be to try and help Christians put walk to their talk and know what type of LIFESTYLE should follow a heart that is in love with Jesus.
This first chapter has a lot to do with enduring trial and hardship and how to do that well, because it is inevitable that we will undergo hardship.
He wants us to understand where temptation comes from (not God), so that we understand who God is and what He is like… super crucial.
Then he wants us to understand that the worlds way of doing things is WAY different than God’s way.
So he’s trying to show us a bunch of examples of things we should let God redeem & transform in our lives & LIFESTYLEs.
Essentially, Jesus’ heart is like this: come as you are, you don’t have to clean yourself up to come to Jesus. But He’s definitely going to clean you up once you come because He loves you too much to leave you in the same destructive world nature.
So he transforms our nature back into the original design of bearing His nature and walking & living His way.
It takes a lot of work & a lifetime of prayer, surrender, following Jesus.
But He is purifying His bride. And we are working out our salvation with fear and trembling for sure.
So dive into James 1 with us & let’s chat about it in SLACK so we can grow together.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
- What stands out to you in James 1 as main themes he is covering?
- What reward does James tell us that we get when we persevere under trial?
- There is a big emphasis on listening & doing, actually responding to the Word with changing your life… what does he say about listening and NOT doing, NOT responding with life change?
- What has James touched on that you feel you still haven’t surrendered to the Lord to let Him change you from worldly to godly?
