WEEK 02 – Others Before Self

This week we’re talking about the Christ-like characteristic of being “Other’s Before Self”.

The closer you get to Jesus, the more like Him you will become. This is the 2nd part of Jesus’ CORE VALUES, or “most important commandment” talk. Love God with all that you are, and LOVE OTHERS AS YOURSELF.

But what does that look like in real life?

It means becoming interruptable, gracious, unoffendable, alert to other people’s needs (not ALL, but especially within your closest spheres (marriage/family, friends, ministry, etc.), contribution minded, a high value on other people, other’s focuses in stead of self focused, etc.

It’s important to have levels of approachability, where you give more to the people closer to you, and less to people the further out of those spheres you get.

But still maintaining an other’s before self spirit and mentality. Just like Jesus gave teaching & healing & compassion & time to the masses, but even more explanation, time, etc. to the 12 disciples, even more to Peter, James, & John, and still even more to John. AND even more of Himself to the Father & time with Him.

Even though Jesus had levels, He still “came to serve and not be served.” He had an “I’m here for them” mentality, not the other way around.

There my be levels, but still a permeation of the spirit of being other’s before self, just like Jesus. In fact, without those healthy boundaries/levels, most of us will be a slave to the masses and everything “urgent” and have nothing to give to the people who are most important in our lives.

Healthy boundaries/levels but still maintaining an overall spirit of Other’s Before Self, can be super tough. But Getting that GOD FIRST piece straight is crucial.

And He will help you both change your spirit to becoming more other’s focused, as well as help you set up healthy boundaries/levels so that you can offer more to your covenant relationships (spouse) and those closest to you.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

(1) How much have I let the Holy Spirit shape me in this area of being “Other’s Before Self” minded?

(2) Do I have healthy boundaries or “levels” that allow me to give more to those who are closest to me? Or do my lack of boundaries/levels leave me giving everything to the masses and the closest people neglected?

(3) What do i need to do (what changes do I need to make) in order to get those boundaries/levels healthy so that I have more to offer those closest to me yet maintaining “Other’s Before Self” throughout my life?

(4) Looking at the Holy Spirit’s spirit of hospitality, do I reflect that same spirit in my own life?

(5) What are some specific things in your own life that the Holy Spirit is poking at that are areas you could improve on & become more like Christ, specifically with being more “Other’s Before Self” & hospitable?

SCRIPTURE

Philippians 2 / 1 Corinthians 13 / Romans 12:10 / Romans 15:1-3

QUOTES

“Only God can give us a selfless love for others, as the Holy Spirit changes us from within. This is one reason we must receive Christ, for apart from His Spirit we can never be freed from the chains of selfishness, jealousy, and indifference. Will others see Christ’s love in your life today?” – Billy Graham

WEEKLY FOCUS

This week, read through each one of these Scriptures each morning. Think about what it means to be “Other’s Before Self” in everything that you do.

Ask God if there are any areas you need to surrender in order to truly have His heart for others. Let this theme guide your God time all week, and even your thoughts and conversation with Him through out your days, all week long. Let Him speak to you about this idea of being OTHER’S BEFORE SELF, and see what He says.

We’d love to hear your feedback, so hop into the devos conversation thread in SLACK & we’re excited to see what the Lord speaks to you this week.

BLESSINGS!
