WEEK 11 – Prayer & Fasting

This week we’re talking about “Prayer & Fasting.”

Our God is amazing, am I right!?

Not only is He ALMIGHTY, HUGE, ALL POWERFUL, ENORMOUS & even SCARY!

But He has also made Himself comforting & approachable.

He has given us PRAYER.

He has given us a way that we can actually talk with Him, all the time…

An open line of communication.

He’s incredible.

But we take such little advantage of this.

And the same way with FASTING.

We sort of see prayer as something we do out of emotion or when we are in need or deep gratitude.

But both PRAYER & FASTING are actually practices, or disciplines, that take us closer in to intimacy with our God no matter what.

If we would develop the DISCIPLINE of PRAYER & FASTING like Jesus did, then we would begin to develop the INTIMACY that Jesus had (and has) with the Father.

No THAT’s some amazing motivation right there haha

Jesus said that His disciples don’t fast because He is with them, but when He left back to Heaven & sent His Spirit, they would fast again.

There is a CLOSENESS that He desires, that being right there with each other satisfies.

But when He is away, PRAYER & FASTING is the way we maintain AND PURSUE a greater closeness & intimacy… the intimacy that we so crave & desire… the intimacy that He made us to walk with Him in.

Lord take us in closer.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
  1. When could I spend time in prayer every day?

  2. What could I pray for? (closer connection with Him, decisions, surrendering, friends, family, specific people (intercession), ask questions, listening to Him time, healing, whatever He wants to talk about in that moment, etc.

  3. When could I spend time fasting? (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, decade…ly)

  4. Put some times on the calendar & enjoy the reward of fasting (intimacy with the Father, satisfying our greater spiritual hunger/thirst) that is greater than the pain of fasting (being super physically hungry, etc.)

  5. What are some emotions I feel towards prayer & fasting?

  6. Lord, what do you think about these emotions and how would you like them to change, shift, increase, decrease, etc…?
SCRIPTURE
  1. 1 John 5:14 ~ This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

  2. 1 John 5:15 ~ And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

  3. 1 Chronicles 16:11 ~ Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.

  4. 2 Chronicles 7:14 ~ if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

  5. Ephesians 6:18 ~ And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

  6. Jeremiah 29:12 ~ Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

  7. Job 22:27 ~ You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows.

  8. James 5:13 ~ Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.

  9. Mark 11:24 ~ Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

  10. Acts 13:2 ~ While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
QUOTES

“Prayer is reaching out after the unseen; fasting is letting go of all that is seen and temporal. Fasting helps express, deepen, confirm the resolution that we are ready to sacrifice anything, even ourselves to attain what we seek for the kingdom of God.”

– Andrew Murray

WEEKLY FOCUS

This week, read through each one of these Scriptures each morning.

Think about just how valuable it is to commit specific time to PRAYER & FASTING.

Ask God if there are any areas you need to surrender or change in order to devote more time to connecting with God through PRAYER & FASTING.

Let this theme guide your God time all week, and even your thoughts and conversation with Him through out your days, all week long.

Let Him speak to you about this idea of PRAYER & FASTING, and see what He says.

We’d love to hear your feedback, so hop into the devos conversation thread in SLACK & we’re excited to see what the Lord speaks to you this week.

BLESSINGS!
