WEEK 23 – CONFIDENCE AND HUMILITY

Insecurity will ROB you from offering what others need.

A confidence that comes from God will ALWAYS lead you to CONTRIBUTE for the sake of others in a way that glorifies God.

One of the most misunderstood dynamics in life is that of being able to walk in confidence AND humility at the same time, in the same person.

How can someone be both confident AND humble?

Doesn’t confidence mean that you have to be conceited and rude and all about yourself?

Well no, not at all, but you definitely do see that in the world.

And most people who are insecure and have a lack of confidence, at least they are humble… right?

Well not necessarily. Actually, most of the time, not at all.

You see. God is Confident AND Humble.

And He created you to be Confident AND Humble.

John Eldridge, one of my favorite authors (Wild At Heart, The Way Of The Wild Heart, etc.) teaches his kids these two truths:

  1. You are loved more than you can imagine.
  2. You’re not the center of the universe.

These 2 truths shape these 2 characteristics deep into us.

#1 teaches us confidence because we are loved. When we know that we are loved, by God (& in any relationship: parents, spouse, etc.), we have confidence.

The Bible says that perfect love casts out fear. So fear brings insecurity, but love brings confidence.

As you can see, THAT type of confidence is not rooted in SELF-confidence, but a confidence that we are loved by God.

SELF-confidence is shakeable. But since God’s love never changes, a confidence rooted in the knowledge that we are loved by Him is UNSHAKEABLE.

It also sets you up to stay Humble even through being confident.

SELF-confidence sets you up to be conceited, self focused, proud, and all about yourself. You bite & claw & scratch to get to the top. You are “SELF-made”.

But A Confidence rooted in being loved by God sets you up to pass on that love in true humility, with a humble heart, that you are not self-made, but owe everything to your incredible God.

You see, #1 teaches you confidence because you are loved. And #2 teaches you humility, because you are not the center of the universe.

It’s humility isn’t a matter of confidence vs. insecurity. It’s a matter of selfishness vs selflessness.

Don’t let insecurity fool you into being humble. It’s still just as self focused and prideful as the other.

C.S. Lewis had it right when he said, “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.”

You see, insecurity will lock your eyes on yourself just as much or even more than SELF-confidence & conceit will. You’re still thinking only about yourself.

So much so that you won’t contribute for the sake of others. The enemy gets you locked onto yourself and you don’t give & serve & love & rescue & bless & walk in your calling for the sake of others.

You’re too locked up in your own insecurities & self-focus to do any of that.

But the Lord sets you free with a God given confidence, that you are already loved by Him, you don’t NEED the affirmation of others, your eyes are free to not be focused on yourself anymore in insecurity OR SELF-confidence.

But instead not you are OTHERS focused, even if you may not be the best. You don’t care about comparison anymore or how many talents you were given compared to others.

You’re just so grateful to be loved by God that you spread that love out for the sake of others and for the Glory of God!

Confidence AND Humility wrapped up in one person, just like it is wrapped up inside of our God.

Let His love shatter your fears, and shatter your self focus. Let His love break through and set your eyes on Him & on serving others with His incredible love.

SelfLESSness in others focused love, and gratitude & worship of God because of His love. That is the key formula 🙂

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
  1. Have I had been blinded to the fact that insecurity is pride and self-focus?
  2. How has insecurity kept you from walking in God’s calling on your life?
  3. How has insecurity robbed OTHERS of what God wants YOU to contribute in their lives?
  4. How can you start to live like He is the main character who has given you a crucial role to play, for His glory?
  5. What would it look like to walk in CONFIDENCE AND HUMILITY for the sake of the Kingdom, loving & rescuing others into His incredible love?
