WEEK 25 – KNOWN FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS
Abraham was ABSOLUTELY the man!
Hebrews 11 says that He was KNOWN for His righteousness.
I’m talking about having a reputation of it, publicly known, not keeping it private, but in all of his dealings with people, because of his character and lifestyle, HE WAS KNOWN FOR HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Even in the face of tragedy, he still keeps it up.
In Genesis 23 we have the account of when Abraham’s precious wife Sarah dies.
He weeps for her, mourns for her. I mean the two of them had been through SO much together. And now at 127 years old, Sarah dies.
Sheesh. I mean, you could imagine how broken down and in need Abraham must feel right now.
But he VERY SPECIFICALLY asks the locals for a plot of land that HE CAN PAY FULL PRICE FOR so that he can bury his wife.
He’s not looking for a deal. He’s not complaining to them saying, “come on guys, give me a break here, I just lost my wife.”
He is insisting that he pay them FULL PRICE for the land and the cave so that he can bury his wife AND honor & bless them in the process.
Not only that, but he is SO well known for this type of righteousness, that the man who owns the land tries to give it to him for FREE to bless Him in his difficult time.
It goes back and forth bit and finally Abraham buys it from him full price and is able to bury his wife in his new plot of land that he bought FULL PRICE.
MAN…
This is So different than our culture today… always looking for a deal, always celebrating a bargain.
But even in the midst of tragedy, Abraham is not asking for a deal, but is intent on blessing and paying full price.
And he’s known so much for this that they insist on giving it to him for free.
Would you rather be known for finding a deal so much that people are always trying to get you to pay full price?
Or would you rather be known so much for paying what things are worth to people, that people are always trying to bless you and give you things for free?
Now THAT is righteous character.
Now don’t get me wrong, you’ve got to be able to receive a gift and allow others the blessing of giving. You’ve got to be able to receive a gift without “feeling bad” or under compulsion to “have to” give them something in return.
Now you can WANT to give them something in return simply out of wanting to bless them like they have blessed you.
And you can receive a gift without feeling bad.
But that is a giving spirit, just like Abraham modeled here.
Even in tragedy, still giving, still paying, still blessing.
Let’s not be the people who are always trying to get something for free. But instead, let us be the people who are always giving, always seeing the value and are willing to pay full price to people, to bless them.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
- What type of character am I known for?
- Why do I think that is?
- How could I become more of a giver & a blesser in how I pay for things?
- How could I become more of a giver & a blesser in general?
